The Colored Qollective Foundation was founded in October 2018 (officially becoming a foundation on January 3rd, 2020) by and for racialised (othering through race), ethnicised (othering through ethnicity), and migrantised (othering through the process of being made an (illegalised) migrant, asylum seeker, or refugee) LGBTQIA+ people. We are committed to the fostering of community and safe spaces – for us, of us, by us. We seek to foster these spaces where our peoples can find safety, support, strength, care, and love, and at the same time amplify our voices to advocate for the rights of our peoples, in particular the rights of those facing injustices, marginalised, illegalised, or forced to flee.
We believe it is crucial that racialised, ethnicised, and migrantised queer people have a space and community to find each other and to be and embrace ourselves. We organise safe(r) space meetings, symposia, trainings, workshops, and other events and activities, and provide psychosocial counselling services and transcare to our communities.
In all our work, intersectionality stands central. This means that we take into account our positionalities in the work that we do; ensuring an analysis that factors how different aspects of identity – such as gender and sexual identity, racialised and ethnicised identity, cultural background, nationality, migration status, religion, beliefs and ideology, age, disability, neurodivergency, mental and physical health, socioeconomic class, economic status, social position, social vulnerability, precarity including precarious work such as sex work, etc. – intersect and impact our privileges, oppressions, rights, and access to society.
Colored Qollective consists of the board, the Core Team (the board and our volunteers, contractors, and employees that coordinate our various initiatives), and the broader Colored Qollective family ((past) volunteers, attendees, and others affiliated with Colored Qollective). Everyone at Colored Qollective is a part of the racialised queer community, and we work together to foster a community for and by us.
