How are designers, experts by experience, and justice practitioners building necessary alternatives for a more just society? What is needed to unbuild systemic violence?

In the lead-up to the Building Public Truths exhibition, opening March 2027 at the Nieuwe Instituut, a diverse group of experts, experts by experience, and community – the next-of-kin of victims of police killings, forensic and research organisations, justice practitioners, community workers and activists, and more – come together to reflect on ‘designing justice’ and the systems that structure freedom and oppression in society. Over these two days, we unpack urgencies of police and state violence in the Netherlands, United Kingdom, France, and beyond.

You are also welcome to join us in the afternoon, where we continue the morning dialogues through broader sessions on policing, oppression, and (un)learning who designs justice.

We will give space to critical discussions on systemic violence in Europe and beyond, focusing on the surveillance and police state, detention and deportation regimes, amongst others.

Together, we unpack these systems rooted in racial and colonial violence and continue to manifest as contemporary structures and sites of exclusion and break apart far-right, (homo)nationalist, xenophobic, ableist, and racist narratives of hate that facilitate the violence and oppression of racialised, migrantised, ethnicised, neurodivergent, disabled, queer and trans, and other minoritised peoples.
